Who We Are

Midcoul has been farmed by the Rose family since 1912.
At present, Midcoul farms 612hectares and contract farms a further 416 hectares. We grow a range of vegetables and arable crops as well as running a breeding sheep flock and finishing cattle.

From being a very traditional sheep and arable farm, it evolved in the 50s to large scale pig production with seasonal turkeys also reared. By the 1980’s the farm staff had dropped to 2 people on the arable side and 6 on the piggery side. The constant fluctuation in pork prices led to the decision to move out of the pigs in the 1990’s and concentrate on new arable crops such as oilseed rape and root crops and enlargement of the farms organically farmed area.
Organic farming increased the farm staff back to 8 full time staff with as many as 70 seasonal staff employed in weeding high value crops like carrots and parsnips. The challenge of growing crops well without using pesticides and artificial fertilisers has led to more investment in specialist machinery for weeding, new approaches to cultivation such as GPS technology fitted to all tractors and machinery for accurate measurement, seeding, fertilising with manures and harvesting.

Going forward, everyone on the farm is constantly striving to ensure that the land is managed to best advantage economically and environmentally.
